Beaver Island is the largest island in Lake Michigan, and very much worth your time to visit.

If you’ve never been to Beaver Island before, and are not sure where to start, the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce offers suggestions for first-time visitors. If you have questions, they provide the answers.

One of the most often asked questions is: How can I get to Beaver Island?

You have several options to get to Beaver Island. By boat, you can catch a ride with the Beaver Island Boat Company. You’ll board the boat at 103 Bridge Park Drive in Charlevoix, Michigan. Visit the Beaver Island Boat Company website or call them at (231) 547-2311. By plane, Fresh Air Aviation will fly you to Beaver Island from the Charlevoix Airport. Get more details by visiting the Fresh Air Aviation website, or calling them at (888) 359-7448.  Another aviation service offering flights to Beaver Island is Island Airways. You may call them at (800) 524-6895 or visit the Island Airways website.

Beaver Island State Wildlife Research Area has been certified as Michigan’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

Beaver Island’s remote location in the middle of northern Lake Michigan makes this destination one of the finest star gazing spots in the United States. The dark skies of Beaver Island are far away from light pollution, so viewing the Northern Lights is also an exceptional experience.

Did You Know?

The Beaver Head Lighthouse is the third oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

The Beaver Island Historical Society is assessing the preservation needs of the Beaver Head Lighthouse. Their vision is for the lighthouse to be restored and sustainable. They have many ideas for future public access including a museum in the Keeper’s House which is attached to the lighthouse.

 

If you are interested in Beaver Island History, you will be happy to explore four museums listed on the Beaver Island Historical Society website. They list a Print Shop, Protar’s Home, a Marine Museum, and a Heritage Park.

There are many interesting artifacts in the museum, including Native American items such as this hanging basket constructed from Birch Bark.
