Highways, Byways, & Scenic Routes

There are many wonderful scenic routes and tours to help discover all the beauty of the Lake Michigan shoreline. Here, we will feature some of our favorites, with more to come soon!

Lake Michigan Circle Tour: This tour was finalized in 1988. and signage was  implemented by the departments of transportation in Lake Michigan’s four coastal states. Throughout this website, we feature the Lake Michigan Circle Tour and some wonderful destinations to visit during your travels around the lake. To learn more about the Circle Tour, start here.

Scenic Route M-22: M-22 is a 116-mile stretch of highway that winds along the Lake Michigan shoreline and through the beautiful countryside of Manistee, Benzie, and Leelanau counties. Visit West Michigan Guides for details about Scenic Highway M-22.

M-119 Heritage Route: Known locally as the “Tunnel of Trees,” the M-119 Heritage Route stretches from Harbor Springs to Cross Village in Northern Michigan. Designated a state Scenic Heritage Route, the views along this 27.5 mile drive are among the most stunning outlooks of Lake Michigan in the state.
