Escanaba is a port city on Little Bay de Noc, an inlet of Green Bay, and is about 55 miles north-northeast of Menominee. The name was created from an Ojibwa (Chippewa) Indian word meaning “flat rock.” Escanaba is the site of the Upper Peninsula State Fair. The area is popular for fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Hiawatha National Forest is headquartered in Escanaba the Bay de Noc Community was established in 1963. The House of Ludington, an infamous hotel and restaurant was built in 1883 and is a local landmark.
