Fox River Trail in Green Bay, Wisconsin | Lake Michigan Destinations
The Fox River Trail in Green Bay
The Fox River Trail is unique within itself, as it actually starts in downtown Green Bay. It is part of the Wisconsin state park system and is overseen by the Wisconsin DNR. The entire trail is 25 miles in length–10 miles of asphalt within the city and 14 miles of crushed stone, starting in De Pere. At this point, the trail steers away from the river and through a more agricultural region until it ends between US-10 and Hilbert in Calumet County.
Activities on the Fox River Trail
The smooth surface on the trail within the city provides the perfect setting for walkers, bicyclists, and runners. Pets are welcome on a leash but you must clean up after them. The southern part of the trail allows horseback riding along the gravel surface, and riders are asked to pick up after their horse. During the winter, snowmobiles are welcome on the limestone part of the trail but not on the asphalt section. This also holds true for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing…but they must share the trail with snowmobiles.
Highlights along the Trail
At mile marker .2 you’ll see the Hazelwood Historic House Museum, which features a home from earlier times. St. Francis Park at mile marker 1 has a gazebo and benches that overlook the river, making this a nice stopping point. Heritage Hill State Historical Park is at mile marker 2.1 and Sunset Park is one more mile down the trail. Voyager Park in De Pere has a nice fishing area, boat docks, and playground equipment. Just a bit further on the trail is the De Pere lock and dam…one of the few manually-operated systems in the U.S.
